The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is on track to become the deadliest on record. There are more than 5,000 confirmed cases, and 2,378 have died. The highly contagious and often fatal disease is thriving amid ongoing violence between rebels and the Congolese government, which has caused a major displacement crisis and enabled the disease to rapidly spread.
The day seemed like any other. Amin* headed out the door to work, leaving his wife, Yasna*, and their two-year-old child at home. He made his way through the streets of Iran, eyes squinted against the early morning sun, gaze eventually landing on his office building ahead.
Fifty-one people have died and more than 1 million are stranded after recent catastrophic flooding and landslides in Bangladesh. “The southeast part of the country has been seriously affected,” a local ministry leader said. “Many people, including our believers, have lost their houses and are living in a difficult situation without food and shelter.”
Mariam*, Laila*, and Huda* came to Jordan as refugees. All were from different walks of life and different countries. But all had one thing in common: all were pregnant with little to no knowledge of birth and caring for a newborn.
Assaults by bandits and Islamic extremists have increased across northern Nigeria in recent days, and assisted missionaries are among those affected. “This year has been especially difficult for our missionaries serving in high-risk zones,” the ministry leader said. “It is a deeply distressing and unstable situation.”
Persecution against Christians in Nepal has steadily increased in the last several years and is driven by a rise in Hindu nationalism. “Anti-conversion laws have created an atmosphere of intimidation,” one leader of an assisted ministry leader said. “Over the past six months, our greatest challenge has not been the remoteness of the villages or the harshness of the terrain, it has been fear within the hearts of some believers and leaders.” Despite the increasing risk of following Christ, the Holy Spirit is moving. People are becoming more open to the gospel, and missionaries are working hard to encourage and comfort believers in this time of persecution. “We remind them that God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control,” a ministry leader said.
